It's neither just English or Spanish - it can be both.
Some random thoughts about choosing your business/organization/brand name.
Why was I trying to recall phrases or idioms I hear being commonly used in Spanish? Because a close colleague of mine emailed me asking for my thoughts on naming his new nonprofit whose mission is to provide financial literacy in Spanish to small business owners. (I’ll keep you all updated once it comes to fruition!)
First, he wanted to check domain name availability and research social handles available (that’s always a good start). His ideas included a single word with a different letter or a domain with a .io or .net ending, of which my initial thought was oh no! Sometimes Google catches those misspellings and sometimes you’re stuck in page 20 of Google Seach Results.
But if we can’t go short and sweet, we must get creative and brainstorm ideas that tap into our bilingual-ness. One that comes to mind is “Yo Quiero Dinero Podcast” run by the badass Jannese Torres. It’s a platform for AND by the Latinx community who are sharing their personal finance stories and inspiring their listeners to take their dinero to the next level. More than the memorable name - it’s simple, direct, and what my mom tia could connect with because it’s en Espanol (even though most of the content is in English).
I like exploring names with some intersectionality, like Vamos Vancouver or Dreamers in Business - both of which were born out of conversations about representation and empowerment. (You’ll DEFINITELY be hearing more about those throughout these posts).
And shout out to my best gal pal living in NYC (and traveling the world) who is the brains behind “Embrace Someplace” for inspiring me to just start writing.
She’s kind, wholesome, incredibly smart, and tenacious with her dreams and goals - this girl is going places and I’m so lucky to call her my best friend <3
Until next time,
Lili
